Sneak Peek Part 2: Regions
5 months ago – Tue, Apr 21, 2026 at 11:33:22 AM

Only 24 hours left on the Inkvein campaign! If you haven’t backed it yet, get over there. We’ve been waiting for you for over a month! In exchange, and perhaps to convince those scared to descend below… let’s examine the anatomy of a region of the Inkvein.

There are 10 regions in the Inkvein (originally 9, but backers made no.10 happen woohoo)! A couple of them have some differences but many follow this structure. Our example today is the first region of the Inkvein: the Old Mines. Note: This material isn’t fully edited yet.

To start, we get an overview page:

You get a full page illustration, then the region map, some overview info, and - in this case - a supplementary rumour table.

Next up, we get the region encounter table:

This is where a lot of the magic happens. We get 6 encounter sequences, which offer evolving situations to give the subjects of encounters their own goals and agency outside of PC interaction. We have a saying (my editor, my playtesters, and I) that “the Inkvein never waits.”

Most folks in this dungeon have goals and agendas, and they do not sit still. These encounters can be linked to each other or into locations in a web of connectivity that makes the space feel alive and breathing.
And it’s not just monsters. There are all sorts of encounters to be found in the Inkvein. Plus, not every monster is going to try to gut you on sight.

Oh, and if you just want a standard encounter table that simply has a number of creatures in the entry, this is bolded in the first entry of each row so it doubles up as a traditional encounter table.

With that, we get to the keyed locations. Let’s take a look at a spread:

There’s a few things of note here so let’s dig in.

On every spread of keys, you get a mini-map. No flicking back to the map page (except in 1 region where trust me… it makes sense), the chunk of the map you need is always on the spread.
At the top of each key (except for dead-ends) are exit descriptions that give your players meaningful sensory information to make choices with. Whereas a map only gives you spatial information, Inkvein gives you texture, smell, sound, and taste. This is all part of the claustrophobia-themed experience.

The grey callout boxes are for some special features:
  • Faction-event triggered evolutions. In some locations, if a faction event has occurred in the setting, the location evolves as a consequence. This means you don’t need to think so much about how faction actions change the setting. I’ve done a ton of that work for you.
  • Return triggered evolutions. For other locations, simply returning after a reasonable period of time results in change. These are like ‘pre-planned’ restockings of locations, so you don’t need to do so much work!
  • NPC events. There are some special NPCs in Inkvein who are making their own long journeys through the setting. In some locations, you can find them and trigger them to progress along their event track.
  • Cause and effect. In some cases, specific player actions have repercussions that need highlighting, so they are given callouts too.
  • Statblocks and magic items.

As you can see, the keying is structured to provide a dynamic environment beyond the immediate content of the location. Locations can change over time without PC involvement! But it’s made easy for you to follow and to run.

Thank you from the team for all your support so far! Our next preview will be an overview on mapping!

Sneak Peek Part 1: Factions
5 months ago – Mon, Apr 20, 2026 at 10:02:31 AM

There’s just 48 hours left on our Inkvein campaign! If you haven’t backed yet, now is the time! And in case you need more convincing, or if you're a backer and just want to see more of what's coming, today we’re releasing a sneak preview of what goes into an Inkvein faction…

There are 4 factions in Inkvein and they are detailed. We’ll look at the Scribes Guild as our example. This is the faction responsible for making spell scrolls with the Ink collected from the Inkvein. They also control the city above the dungeon, the City of Wel.

We start with the overview spread. Note: This material isn’t fully edited yet.

This gives you:
  • A rundown on the general vibes and goals of the faction.
  • Their relationships with the 3 other factions in the setting.
  • A note on their base of operations. More on this later.
  • 3 key secrets that the faction is guarding.
  • 3 primary resources the faction uses for leverage.

Next we dig into the 3 faction leaders and the faction event track:

Here you get a rundown of the 3 leaders of the guild, with strengths, goals, and weaknesses for each. Next to them is the 10-step event sequence that the faction progresses through, causing the setting to change and evolve. Players can help factions with these objectives or work to hinder them instead!

One neat feature of Inkvein is that PCs can gain ranks with factions, enabling them to train faction-specific talents! Each faction has a tree of 9 talents that can be acquired by building a relationship with the faction and then training with them.

In the case of the Scribes, there are talents for martial techniques, artisan crafting, and research capabilities. Loads of distinct options!
Last of all, you get statblocks. And not just a line of numbers but details to build a picture of these individuals. Each block has an appearing value in case you want to generate a group of a certain creature (though creature numbers in the dungeon itself are always specified so you don’t need to roll).

And I did say we’d get back to the base of operations later… well you get a fully keyed location for the base, the Scribe Spires, in the City of Wel chapter!

Some of the other factions have differences: their base might be a whole region of the Inkvein, they might only have one ‘leader’, and in the case of the Ink itself, there’s 10 pages of nasty creatures rather than one spread of members.

We hope you enjoyed this extra preview! Tomorrow we'll have a sneak peek at how regions are structured!

The Inkdrake is coming!
6 months ago – Wed, Apr 15, 2026 at 10:53:14 AM

If you take a look at this updated Inkvein map you might notice something...

The Inkdrake Hoard is here!

This is one of the most substantial stretch goals of the campaign:
Luke is adding an extra 10-page region to this already massive book. Get ready to explore an immense lair filled with so many silver coins they form a field of dunes! He's working on the region right now, which is going to a be a 10-ish location pointcrawl, featuring one of the most terrifying creatures in the Inkvein, the Inkdrake.

Thanks again from all the team for your support. We are in the final stretch now (1 week left!) and we would be grateful to everyone who can share the project online or with friends. Our next stretch goal is a really fun one. At $40k we'll be packing 4 printed custom Inkvein bookmark character sheets in with every physical order!

We've been hard at work on the project. Luke has completed over 60 illustrations for and it's looking like the final book will have over 100 pieces of art (more than we had originally intended, but well worth it to make the book even better). Lyndsay has completed developmental editing on over half the book and we are working hard to make sure everything inside finely-tuned.

We'll be sending another update within the next week, see you then!

Character sheets & bookmark ribbon!
6 months ago – Mon, Apr 06, 2026 at 04:35:49 AM

Hi there folks! We've reached stretch goals for digital character sheets and the first bookmark ribbon!

Thank you to everyone who has backed us so far, there's over 600 of you now (which is madness). We're hard at work continuing to illustrate, edit, and making the stretch goals we've already reached.

Our next stretch goal is a big one. The Hoard of the Inkdrake is a whole new 10-page region that could get added to the book. This lair of an Ink-infected dragon is perfect for players to explore in a high stakes heist, or to negotiate with a fearsome monster. Plus you get stats for an Ink-dragon. Who doesn't want that!?

If you've already backed, spread the word and we can push to get more goodies...

Thanks again from all the team!

Physical GM workbook!
6 months ago – Mon, Mar 23, 2026 at 09:13:13 AM

Hey there backers and followers, over the weekend we reached a fantastic stretch goal... the GM workbook is now a physical item! All backers of the physical book will be getting an A5 staple-bound zine with tracking tools and condensed rules/procedures to help make the experience of running Inkvein even smoother. Next up is the digital character sheet and the bookmark ribbon.

Thank you for all your support so far, catch you soon!
